I agree it's not necessary, but Atheists are looked down upon by the deluded masses enough as is, if one out of a group does stupid stuff, it doesn't hurt our overall image. I think most people who can call themselves atheists and defend themselves can stand alone powerfully and be unstoppable in groups.
