Description: Atheists get asked all the time, "If you don't believe in heaven, then where do you think we go when we die?" The answer is that we cease to exist--that is, our personality ceases to exist. But if there is no soul or mind, if everything is naturalistic, then the matter of which we are made *is* us in a very real sense, even when seperated from that which we think makes us alive (the ability to reason, self-awareness, etc.). The point of this video is not to preach something akin to pantheism, or something along the lines of a materialistic reincarnation. Rather, it's simply about how that which makes up our bodies right now was here billions of years ago, and will be here billions of years from now. _________________ What happens when our lives end, when self-awareness is crushed with non-existence? Our personality can then only exist in the memories of others. Yet the matter from which we were made will continue to exist. We will return to the earth for a long, deep slumber, time passing by unnoticed. We came from the stars billions of years ago, and eventually we will make our way back to deep space. Perhaps we will play a part in the facilitation of life somewhere. Or perhaps we will simply be interstellar dust. We are merely the borrowers of matter for a while. And eventually we must pay back our debt, and let the universe do with our matter as it will. |

| Matur1n ::: Favorites Any debts aren't owed to the universe, it isn't sentient. The God that made the universe is though, and we owe a great debt to him. Our personalities won't pass away with death, our souls are eternal and most people can feel that inside. 07-08-23 00:37:18 __________________________________________________ | |
| Erdrickgr ::: Favorites Well, as I said, I certainly didn't mean to be pantheistic about, or anthropomorphize, the universe. The video isn't meant to be taken in a woodenly literal way, though I think the basic ideas are accurate. I was a Christian for 8 years (went to Bible college, all that jazz), so I've thought lots about the God hypothesis. 07-08-23 09:07:53 __________________________________________________ | |
| Matur1n ::: Favorites It just sounds like all you think we are is our bodies. Even if you struggle with the God hypothesis, most people can intuitively feel they are more than just the atoms in their bodies. 07-08-23 19:47:16 __________________________________________________ | |
