Description:

Like many of these Cold War relics, this film is meant to reassure the viewer that the nuclear family is strong enough to survive a nuclear war, and that fallout isn't really that dangerous if you wait two weeks in your shelter before dealing with it. I wonder if these films did not serve a twofold purpose: to encourage the populace to remain calm in the face of what we now know to be a potentially far more dangerous situation, and to reassure us that our own use of nuclear weapons on a certain other country was not that horrible. I find the narrator's tone particularly unsettling here. In the calm tones of science and authority, he tells us that the thing that may kill us is our friend, like the doctor in the Milgrim Experiment that says it's okay to increase the voltage on the test subject when in fact, we're frying the poor guy to death.

If they had fallout shelters they would have been protected. The main problem was that the govenment told everyone that it was just a fire and they had nothing to worry about.

Fallout does NOT make nearby things radioactive; it will, however, irradiate living tissue, causing cellular death (common) and mutations (rare). The object is to keep fallout and its associated radiation away from living things -- after surviving the initial blast(s). Many will survive...mostly those who learned and prepared. So far, man has never invented a weapon that was not widely used; learning defense against weapons has saved many lives.

There has beeen a conscious effort to distort facts and confuse the public about the nature of nuclear events and the results thereof. The "duck and cover" drill was never intended to protect you from the effects of a direct hit by a bomb; it won't even do you any good if a stick of dynamite goes off if the room with you. It was meant to protect you from flying debris at some distance from "ground zero".
